Abhay Charan De was born on the 1st September 1896 in Calcutta, India to Gour Mohan De a cloth merchant, and Rajani his wife. Bengali tradition dictates that an astrologer is consulted. The child Abhay's reading was auspicious and predicted that when this child reached the age of seventy he would cross the ocean, become a great exponent of religion and open 108 temples. Gour Mohan, a pure Vaisnava (devotee of Krsna) raised his son to be Krsna Conscious and had himself never touched meat, fish, eggs, tea or coffee, faithfully worshipping Lord Krsna in his home. Gour Mohan wanted his son to preach Srimad- Bhagavatam (ancient scriptures) and learn the art of playing mrdanga (drum). Rajani was a chaste and religious woman and a model housewife in the Vedic sense. At six years old Abhay asked his father for his own deity (form of the Supreme Lord) and learned all about worship from his father. |

Before the wedding Joan described how Srila Prabhupada had offered her sabji, (vegetable stew) yoghurt, salad and capatis and although she was on a macrobiotic diet, she ate until she was full. In San Francisco, on January 16, 1967 the announcement for United Airlines Flight 21 from New York was heard by a group of about fifty hippies, gathered in anticipation, and apprehensive about what the Swami would be like. Only a few knew him, and Mukunda reminded everyone, they would please the Swami if they were all chanting Hare Krsna when he came through. Many stood holding incense and flowers. |

The day after the Mantra-Rock dance in San Francisco, in January of 1967, although cheered and applauded by thousands of hippies the night before, Srila Prabhupada, was described as quiet and unassuming as a child. He remained untouched, aloof, innocent and humble, while at the same time appearing very grave and ancient. Swamiji was not of this world, he was always thinking of Krsna. Joan, Janaki's sister, was touched by Swamiji's activities and his kindness . and I longed for more association with him. Srila Prabhupada each morning would teach Joan, Janaki and others how to cook. |
