Now 73, Srila Prabhupada had opened 21 temples in 3 years. And on July 28, 1970 Srila Prabhupada dictated regarding establishing a governing body commission (GBC) listing the 12 persons who would form the GBC. He intended that the GBC would oversee the activities of ISKCON, keeping each temple independent and self-sufficient. He said ?.?not that one shall dominate and distribute benefit to others and they do nothing but beg from you?..? For the first time in almost three years, Srila Prabhupada returned to Calcutta, India in August, 1970 with a party of ten devotees. He was met by Acyutananda and Jayapataka. He soon asked for 20 more to join him. |

Prabhupada left Bombay on the 10 February 1972 for a month. The payment of fifty thousand rupees was made, and a few devotees moved to the Juhu land. While devotees lived in a tent, the rats and mosquitoes would disturb their sleep, and while clearing overgrown weeds they came upon empty liquor bottles and overflowing sewage. Their resolution became weak until Brahmananda Swami gave the devotees new impetus. By the time Prabhupada returned to Bombay, Radha-Rasavihari deities were installed as he had instructed as this would secure the land. “Once the Deities are installed on a piece of land, no one will remove Them”. Again leaving Bombay and placing responsibility for the collection of funds for the new temple in the hands of Giriraja, Prabhupada began a world preaching tour with a few disciples. He visited Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Tokyo and Honolulu, Portland, Paris and Glasgow.

Reacting, in a letter to a life member, to the news of the sales agreement on the Juhu land in Bombay being cancelled, Srila Prabhupada said “I shall be the last man to give up Hare Krishna Land to the rogue Mr N.” Even Prabhupada’s disciples were having difficulty understanding Prabhupada’s unbreakable determination, but Prabhupada saw Bombay as the most important city in India—the gateway, and he had promised the deities, Radha-Rasavihari. He had prayed “Dear Sir, please stay here, and I will build You a beautiful temple”. Prabhupada had a keen fighting spirit to keep the land. He was vigilant, militant, holding his ground against Mr N.

On Ratha Yatra day in London on July 7, 1973, although not looking very strong, Srila Prabhupada refused to sit on the vyasasana placed and decorated for him on the ratha cart. He said “No, I am just a devotee. I will go in the procession.” Revatinandana remembered “During the kirtana Prabhupada was right in the middle of the kirtana with his karatalas the whole time. He was dancing back and forth and jumping up and down and dancing.” Alternating between dancing and standing facing the Deities with his arms raised, Prabhupada sometimes looked very ill and sometimes he looked like an eighteen year old boy. It was an amazing sight for passersby to see a man of that age dancing and jumping in the air like a young boy. When the hour marathon finally ended at Trafalgar Square, Prabhupada sat on a little vyasasana and delivered a lecture about the holy name of Krishna.

On August 4, 1974, on arriving at Ramana-reti in Vrndavana, India, for the grand opening of the Krishna-Balaram temple, Srila Prabhupada was met with kirtana and flowers. There had been many invitations sent out around the world, and as he walked through the construction site, the happiness the devotees felt upon seeing him, quickly turned to fear. Prabhupada was very angry that the temple was not complete with piles of sand and bricks, no formal walk-ways, piles of rubble and no ornamentation. The devotees’ faces went white, and Prabhupada said “There will be no opening.”
Prabhupada’s anger increased, and he yelled at all the devotees, complaining of mismanagement. Those who could, kept their distance from Prabhupada’s fury. A tense discussion ensued and after discussion with Guru das, Surabhi and Yamuna, Prabhupada decided on Rama-navami in April for the opening.
Prabhupada had to take the burden and the agony for his disciples’ failure to do the job. He felt transcendental lamentation over his failure to open the Krishna-Balaram Mandir. Prabhupada wanted his disciples to help him with his projects to serve his Guru Maharaja—projects which, if successful, could save the world from misery.
