Prabhupada’s ambition was to replace mundane literature with transcendental. At least in every home there should be one piece of Krishna conscious literature. If a person read only one page, his life could be turned toward perfection.
Another breakthrough for book distribution came at the end of 1972. Ramesvara said “…on December 22, 1972, … we accidentally discovered the Christmas marathon in Los Angeles.” After distributing books until unusually late and achieving what he thought was a record breaking result, Ramesvara returned to the temple at around midnight. He was expecting everyone to be waiting for him to see how many books he had sold. He burst into the sankirtana room to find only one person. He said, “Oh, no. Everyone went to bed?” Madhukanta replied “No, nobody is back yet”. Ramesvara was the first one back. It was completely unplanned and spontaneous. “No one had ever distributed as many books before…..A big day had been considered to be somewhere between twenty-five and forty books. But we were distributing between five thousand and six thousand …….. for a three day period. |

Srila Prabhupada in June of 1975 decided to take another U.S. tour and visited Laguna Beach, San Diego, Dallas, New Orleans, Mississippi, Detroit, Toronto, Boston and New York, eventually travelling to Europe and India. Prabhupada was concerned for his disciples and for all people. He was distressed by the fallen and ignorant state of humanity, specifically in the West, and would work intensively on his important Indian projects for a few months but would always return again to the West.
Alfred Ford, the great-grandson of Henry Ford, had become attracted to Krishna Consciousness through meeting some of Prabhupada’s disciples in Detroit and reading Bhagavad-gita As It Is. On Prabhupada’s arrival in Detroit, now regularly chanting sixteen rounds and initiated by Srila Prabhupada, Ambarisa was waiting behind the wheel of a white Lincoln Continental limousine at the airport. As Srila Prabhupada approached Ambarisa offered obeisances then returned to the driver’s seat just like a menial chauffeur.

In Vrndavana on September 13, 1975 Srila Prabhupada laid the cornerstone for a large gurukula building adjacent to the Krishna-Balaram Mandir. The building would accommodate five hundred students from all over the world.
Constant travel was becoming more and more inconvenient, Prabhupada said and in October on a trip to Mauritius to meet the Prime Minister, the black Citroen sent by the Prime Minister for Prabhupada was totally destroyed together with another car that collided with them in a head-on crash.
Prabhupada sustained injuries to his chin, hand and leg and Pusta Krishna and Brahmananda were treated for head injuries they received when their heads hit the windscreen.

An issue facing ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) in January 1977, was whether members of the movement were members by their own choosing or were they being kept in the movement by psychological manipulation, “brainwashing." When Srila Prabhupada had first heard of this case, his reply in a letter from Vrndavana had been like a clarion call to battle against the forces of illusion.
