In May 1967, nearing the age of 72 years, Swamiji left San Francisco and arrived in New York. After the flight, he spoke of a "blockading" in his ears. He didn't rest, but went straight into three hours of strong lecturing and chanting in the storefront at 26 Second Avenue. He appeared dazzling and lovable, and by his presence, his glances, and his words, he increased the devotees' Krsna consciousness. .
There were signs that Srila Prabhupada should be cautious about his health. While appearing on the Allen Burke TV show, Swamiji said that the lights caused him much pain in his head. Rupanuga, during a lecture, noticed Swamiji's hand shaking, and Kirtananananda remembered that Srila Prabhupada had complained of his heart skipping and being unable to move. He had told Kirtanananda "don't call a doctor. Don't take me to hospital. Just give me my beads and chant Hare Krsna". |

Srila Prabhupada left his disciples in New York and on July 24, 1967 after a sixteen hour delay in London, he flew with Kirtanananda to Moscow, then to Delhi. Their arrival was a contrast with the loving farewell in New York. At two A.M. they caught a taxi to the Chippiwada Radha-Krishna temple, and were shown upstairs to Prabhupada?s room, which was just as he had left it. It was dusty, and Kirtanananda was shocked at Swamiji living in such a poor, humble place. Srila Prabhupada developed a bad cough and fever which became worse by the morning. A Sikh doctor gave him a penicillin injection, and Prabhupada rested quietly for the first time in twenty four hours. Kirtanananda wrote to his Godbrothers in New York to please chant HARE KRISHNA, for that was the only thing that could save him. |

In mid December 1967 Prabhupada arrived back in San Francisco and after a few weeks he went to Las Angeles. Then in May, a few months after leaving Las Angeles, Swamiji paid his first visit to his ISKCON centre in Boston. It was in Boston that Prabhupada, or Swamiji as he was known then, accepted the name Prabhupada. Prabhupada said ?A spiritual master is usually addressed by names like Gurudeva, Visnupada or Prabhupada and when he was asked ?May we call you Prabhupada?? he answered ?Yes?. Printed in Back to Godhead was an explanation of Prabhupada. ?The word Prabhupada is a term of utmost reverence in Vedic religious circles, and it signifies a great saint even amongst saints.? |

George Harrison, of the Beatles, after meeting the devotees, recorded songs like My Sweet Lord which was the number one single in America for two months. His million selling album, ?Living in the Material World? was number one on Billboard for five weeks. An old favourite idea of the London devotees was to get the Beatles to make a recording chanting Hare Krsna. If the Beatles did it, the mantra would certainly become world famous. George liked the idea but he preferred that the devotees sing it, and he produce it on the Apple label. ?You guys make the money rather than we get it.? He said. ?Let?s make a record?. So the devotees went over to George?s house for a chanting session. On the day of the recording, about a dozen devotees, including some newly recruited Britishers, assembled at EMI Recording Studios on Abbey Road. |
