As some of you know, I am now 62 years of age, and have entered the last decade of what was once known as one’s ‘threescore and ten’ or 70 years on earth. I’m trying to grow old gracefully. Joan Rivers (of all people—’entertainment be damned’) once said, ‘Old age isn’t for sissies.’
I realise that death should not be regarded as an end, but as a beginning, or a transition or a sleep. Hamlet called death “that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns” that “puzzles the will, and makes us rather bear those ills we have, than fly to others that we know not of.”

I had the good fortune recently to be involved in a discussion about the youth of ISKCON, their role in the growth of the movement, and the spreading of Krishna Consciousness throughout the world. His Holiness Bir Krishna Goswami encouraged the young devotees present to go out and have adventures as he, and the other pioneers of the movement did in the early days. He talked about the dangers, the austerities, the excitement, the adventure and the challenge of being sent away by Srila Prabhupada to open temples . Many devotees in those days were initiated after six months and were sent on what seemed like, impossible missions. These ‘youth’, many in their early twenties, are the great leaders of today, and in 11 short years had opened 108 temples for Srila Prabhupada all around the world.

Since Nityananda’s appearance day takes place this time of the year, I thought it is appropriate to use the following excerpt from a lecture Srila Prabhupada gave on this sacred day in Bhubaneswar, when it occurred on February 2, 1977. This is my personal “message” for this newsletter. Here it is:

A foreign power is infiltrating New Zealand and we are not even fearful of it. It is slowly conquering the population and controlling what it does and how it thinks. How is this happening apparently undetected? What are the results?
Propaganda is entering this country and our government, and we are permitting this propaganda to infect our minds and the minds of our children. Unlike a war waged with weapons and obvious violence, this insidious programming is happening right under our noses and we are voluntarily taking part in the brain washing.

This is a touching and inspiring true story of a Catholic Priest, who devoted his life to caring for the exiled lepers of the Island of Molokai.
The beauty of this film is its message that spirituality and humanity are non seperable. Lead actor David Wenham portrays the character of Father Damien with a simplicity and tenderness that does justice to the humble hero that was Father Damien.

Srila Prabhupada changed the names of his followers. That’s pretty radical when you consider a few things. First, a person’s name is generally thought of as the sound each person holds most dear in his or her heart. Few people do it (oh sure, there’s been a few famous ones, like Stalin, Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, and Mark Twain, but we’re talking about the many billions who’ve settled for the name their parents gave them.)

“Actually, one who is guided by Jesus Christ will certainly get liberation.” “Jesus Christ took all the sinful reactions of the people and sacrificed his life. That is the responsibility of a spiritual master. (Source: Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers 9) Jesus Christ was such a great personality—the son of God, the representative of God. He had no fault. Still, he was crucified. He wanted to deliver God consciousness, but in return they crucified him—they were so thankless. They could not appreciate his preaching. But we appreciate him and give him all honor as the representative of God. (Source: Science of Self Realization 4) |

Only at the very last minute have I found the inspiration to write this column. Some Conch issues seem less difficult to put together, but this issue has been a nightmare, with tears, frustration and stress. It seems that every issue brings its own test, and this time is no different. My desire to produce a ‘perfect’ publication to please my ‘perfect’ spiritual master, the late Tamal Krishna Goswami and my siksa guru Mukunda Goswami, only brings anxiety, because ‘perfect’ for me is impossible. A new computer has brought so many difficulties, and many obstacles have come. A very busy festival season combined with having a demanding job, a home and garden to maintain, , family, temple service, projects, and the quality 16 rounds I promised to chant daily. So it goes on. Sometimes I feel like giving up.

Lesson 1. When each goose flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. By flying in a ?V? formation, the whole flock adds 71 percent more to their flying range than as if each bird flew alone. |
