Devotee artist, Colin Greenwood, has returned from Jagannatha Puri (India) and plans to complete the stained glass for all the high windows inside the temple room in two stages. The first ten windows will be completed and installed before the Janmastami Festival, August 16th, being the first stage. The second stage will be completed in time for the Ratha Yatra Festival in December. Featuring various birds intertwined with lotuses, the windows will include glass in bright South Indian colours, modern opalescent and cut glass jewels.
The artwork for these windows has been exclusively designed by Colin and Ramesh Candra Maharana. Mr Maharana is a Master Artist at the Jagannatha Puri Temple in Orissa, and has spent many years learning, preserving, and teaching the traditional Vedic art of Orissa. Colin has over thirty years experience in stained glass art and is considered to be one of the best stained glass artists in Australasia. He has spent thousands of hours making stained glass windows, and also teaching the skill to others. This is the first time that these two unique art forms have been combined to produce modern day stained glass windows. Guaranteed to be around for hundreds of years the stained glass windows will preserve these two very old art forms. The total estimated cost for the windows is $15,500 and they will take 1600 hours to make. Contributions for these valuable and beautiful additions to the temple can be made by contacting the temple secretary Rasabihari on 412 8075 or Madri on 412 8685.
