Recently released on DVD, this account of the life and works of Mother Teresa provides both an inspiring and often humorous experience not to be missed. Olivia Hussey shines as the humble yet iconic nun whose compassion and simplicity generated a movement. With a backdrop of the chaotic streets of Calcutta alongside the, at times stoic climate of the Catholic Church, this story is a melange of colourful characterisation, tense moments and an underlying message of faith, joy and hope.
Mother Teresa finds a "calling within a calling" when she realizes her vocation is to see the face of Christ amongst the poor and suffering. She so dedicates her life to helping the sick and dispossessed, and not without some opposition and tribulation. For any person who wishes to further their relationship with God, Mother Teresa speaks the words "role model." Brave, bold, detached, simple, funny, resourceful, happy, and human, are words that spring to mind. All of us who have served in ISKCON will relate to the philosophy and realism in this movie. At one point Mother Teresa attests her preference for her project to run in "happy disorganisation." (I think I laughed the hardest in the Church) She comments that God loves things which are small, and that the most important ingredient in performing God's work is love. This movie is all about love, it probably never made it big, I saw it in a church, and you know what, I bet God did love it.
