ImageHis Holiness Srila Bhakti Caru Swami Maharaja appeared in this world, on 17th September 1945 at Kolkata, West Bengal. He spent most of his early life in the city of Kolkata. During 1970 he left India for higher studies in Germany, where he came across Vedic Literatures and discovered the richness of the spiritual heritage of India. In 1975 he returned to India to wholeheartedly pursue the spiritual path.

After thoroughly studying the Vedic scriptures, His Holiness became aware of the need to find a spiritual master who could lead him on a sound spiritual course. After searching for one year without coming across a spiritual master to whom he could fully surrender, he felt despondent and disappointed. When he almost gave up his hope of finding his spiritual master, he came across and read a book called The Nectar of Devotion, a masterpiece written by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and was greatly influenced which inspired him to search out his Spiritual Master. Becoming engrossed in the depths of that literature, he realized that he had found his spiritual master and the path for which he was searching.

As he continued to read Srila Prabhupada’s works, his conviction grew stronger, as did his desire to meet Srila Prabhupada. At that time, Srila Prabhupada was in America. His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami joined the temple in Sridhama Mayapur and became more involved in devotional service to the Lord, all the while awaiting Srila Prabhupada’s return to India.

When Srila Prabhupada returned to India at the end of 1976, the momentous meeting between His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami and his eternal spiritual master finally took place. That keenly desirous meeting changed his life style completely. From their very first meeting, Srila Prabhupada very kindly entrusted him with the assignment of translating his books into Bengali and made him his Secretary for Indian Affairs. Within only a few months, Srila Prabhupada accepted him as his beloved disciple and he gave him both the first and second initiations into the disciplic succession on the same day on 5th March 1977, the Gaura Purnima day at Sri Mayapura Dhama and renamed him as Ksira-cora Gopinatha Das Brahmacari.

Due to the special mercy of Srila Prabhupada upon His Holiness, he received the sannyasa diksa within three months on 1st June 1977, on the auspicious day of Lord Jagannatha Snan-Yatra at Sri Vrndavana Dhama. Subsequently He became known as His Holiness Srila Bhakti Caru Swami. His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami was the only disciple to receive first, second and sannyasa initiation within three months.

To name a few of over fifty volumes of books translated by His Holiness, notably are Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-Gita As It Is, Caitanya Caritamrita, Bhakti Rasamrita-sindhu. He also compiled and published Bhakti Geeti Sanchayani, an authentative work on Bengali Vaisnava Bhajans and Vaisnava Sadachara.

Subsequently he became a member of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON and was elected Chairman in 1989. At present He acts as a G.B.C. with responsibilities in the USA, France, Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, South Africa, Mauritius and India. He was acclaimed for his wonderful culinary activities, and Srila Prabhupada often relished delicious Krishna prasadam prepared by him.

His Holiness is proficient in singing. His Vaisnava Bhajans are indeed worth listening to. Recently, he wrote in USA a Book entitled "The History of our Vaisnava Heritage", which is essential reading for all Vaisnavas. He cherished all along a magnificent dream of making a biographical video epic of the life of his spiritual master Srila Prabhupada. And he started making the mega serial entitled "Abhay Charan" in 1996. The serial is now complete and it has been broadcast all over the world—in Europe, South Africa, and North America as well as on Indian National Television, Doordarshan.

Recently he has been engaged in the development and construction of a huge temple on land offered by the Madhya Pradesh government in Ujjain, India. After only ten months he opened this beautiful temple in February 2006.

Currently, amidst ceaselessly traveling the globe to give seminars and conferences on a variety of spiritual topics in order to inspire and enrich people from every race, religion, and ethnicity, His Holiness Bhakti Caru Swami oversees the smooth functioning of the Temple in Ujjain.
