Nestled into the fern covered side of the hill, opposite the old Auckland Railway Station building, The Loft is the latest centre inspired by His Holiness Devamrta Swami, and has been regularly conducting programmes since February 2005. Other centres are in Wellington, Christchurch, Melbourne and Brisbane.
The sounds of traffic and the busy city streets are left behind as you climb the stairs to the Loft. Entering you find a serene atmosphere with welcoming, friendly women mainly initiated disciples of Devamrta Swami. The décor is modern and soothing and consists of a dining room which seats 35 guests, a kitchen, a philosophy and lecture room, changing rooms and a large room used for teaching yoga. This room has large windows at the back featuring an attractive fern covered bank. The Loft programme aims to break down misconceptions and barriers. It offers a contemporary, urban preaching environment, and a relaxed atmosphere. New people can open up and be exposed to philosophy which can practically help them. The goal is to make the centre "their place", like a club, so that guests feel some ownership and can feel comfortable. Guru Vani the overall co-ordinator of the centre works with the disciples in their different areas of expertise. There are four permanent staff and four helpers, all women aged between 22 and 32 years. The funds to open the centre were largely collected by three of them over an 18 month period in Manchester, England. The most popular activity is the cultural Hare Krishna Fest on a Sunday, and they also provide yoga classes, philosophy discussions, and excursions.
